Referrals for Specialty Care

Children’s health care needs are unique throughout all stages of their development. Sometimes, this means that your pediatrician or nurse practitioner may recommend seeing a specialist for conditions other than routine care. These can include audiology, heart care, diabetes, gastroenterology, gynecology, care for expectant parents and more. To support your child’s health care needs, our care providers work with the Children’s National Hospital network of specialists. Children’s National is ranked as the number six pediatric hospital in the country by U.S. News & World Report and has achieved top 10 rankings in five unique specialties.

If your child needs specialty care, our practices will work with your family to connect you to the best providers. Depending on your insurance plan, your child may need a referral from your pediatrician. Referrals for specialists can be sent electronically or via a hard copy referral. After you have seen the specialist, your primary care provider is available to review the recommendations made and to help coordinate ongoing care for your child.

Pediatric primary care is about prevention and wellness.

We believe kids do better when they have reliable, comprehensive care — whether it’s working to keep your child healthy through preventive care, helping your child feel better when they’re sick or coordinating care when additional services are needed. Our goal is to provide your family with the foundation for a lifetime of good health.

Through Children’s Pediatricians and Associates (CP&A), your child will have a dedicated primary care provider, chosen by you. If your provider is not available for an appointment, you can see any in-office pediatrician or nurse practitioner.

The Vaccines For Children (VFC) program

The Vaccines For Children (VFC) program is a federally funded program that provides vaccines at no cost to children who might not otherwise be vaccinated because of inability to pay. CDC buys vaccines at a discount and distributes them to grantees—i.e., state health departments and certain local and territorial public health agencies—which in turn distribute them at no charge to those private physicians’ offices and public health clinics registered as VFC providers. Children from 0-18 years old who are Medicaid-eligible, Uninsured, American Indian or Alaska Native are eligible* for VFC vaccines are entitled to receive those vaccines for free. Cityworld Family Practice is VFC Licensed provider. Qualified patients will get their vaccines for free. They might pay just an administrative fee of $23 per vaccine

For Expectant Parents

Bringing a baby into the world is an exciting time for parents. We know your baby deserves the best care from the start. Choosing a pediatrician is an important first step in starting your baby’s health off on the right track.

You may want to get to know your child’s care provider before he or she is even born — especially if you are aware that specialty services may be needed. It’s also helpful to make sure that office location, hours and staffing work for you and your schedule.

CP&A pediatricians and nurse practitioners are skilled in caring for newborns and children. They are ready to work with you to keep your child happy and healthy.

Immunization Policy

The team at CP&A firmly believes in the effectiveness of immunizations to prevent serious illnesses and save lives. We also firmly believe in the safety of immunizations. Our offices follow the immunization schedule outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has been scientifically tested for safety and efficacy.

There is no such thing as an approved “alternative” immunization schedule. We will be happy to provide information to help you understand the science behind immunizations, as we have a commitment to our patients to keep them safe and provide the best pediatric care available. This includes giving immunizations on time, according to the CDC/AAP schedule.

Preparing for Your Visit

Whether we need to see your child for a routine check-up, or your child is feeling sick, preparing for your appointment can help ease the process.

When you call to schedule your first appointment, be sure to give us the best email and phone number to contact you. A few days before your first appointment, you will receive an email and/or a text message alerting you to complete the check-in process online. For new patients, the check-in process involves gathering lots of information about your child’s past medical history and pertinent family history. Because this process can take time, we strongly recommend completing it before your appointment.

If you are unable to complete the check-in process online, you will be asked to do it when you arrive for your appointment.

Keep in mind the following helpful tips to make your first appointment go smoothly:

  • Bring a list of any medications your child is taking.
  • Bring your child’s current insurance card and your driver’s license.
  • Bring any medical records (including X-rays and lab tests).
  • Bring your child’s immunization record.
  • Complete the check-in process online before your appointment.
  • Write down a list of questions you may have for your pediatrician.

Our teams work to keep your appointments on time. Please help us by arriving on time or early for your appointment time. We understand situations come up, so if you are running late, we may ask you to reschedule the appointment. If you do need to reschedule a well visit, we request that you contact our office 48 hours in advance.
